Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child have their first eye examination?
The College of Optometrists recommends that children have their first eye exam at six months, followed by another at three years, and annual check-ups thereafter. Early detection of vision issues is crucial. If there are signs like a family history of eye conditions, medical concerns, or a white pupil, seek an optometrist sooner.
Watch for indicators of vision problems, such as:
- Bumping into objects
- Frequent squinting or eye rubbing
- Tilting their head to see better
- Complaining of blurred vision or headaches
- An eye turn or unusual redness/discharge
Early exams can prevent permanent vision loss, and timely interventions like glasses or patching therapy can often reverse issues. Children don’t need to read letters for an exam; optometrists can use pictures and assess non-verbal children as well. Prioritizing eye health is essential for your child’s overall development and well-being.
When is an eye examination covered by OHIP?
Eye examinations are covered by OHIP under the following conditions:
- Annually for individuals aged 0-19.
- Every 18 months for those 65+, or annually for medically eligible seniors.
- Annually for individuals with specific medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration) or if they have an acute or chronically progressive ocular condition.
Additional visits may be covered for patients requiring more frequent assessments, or for eye injuries or infections.
