Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Amblyopia, or lazy eye, affects about 2-3% of the population, typically diagnosed in children under the age of six. If you notice your child squinting or closing one eye frequently, it could be a sign of this condition.
Amblyopia can result from factors like untreated refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. If not addressed, it may lead to permanent vision loss in the affected eye, so early diagnosis is crucial.
The primary treatment involves placing a patch over the stronger eye to encourage use of the lazy eye and is generally very effective. Other options include medications and, in more severe cases, corrective surgery. If you suspect your child may have amblyopia, consult an eye care professional for an evaluation or call us at 905-457-4700.
